With over 45 universities and colleges in London, choosing the right student accommodation in the right area might appear daunting, but luckily there are numerous resources to help.

First, it helps to get an understanding of the different types of accommodation available:

  • Flat share – these are ideal if you’re happy to cohabit but want a quieter setting than a full house, or if you’re sharing with a group of friends
  • House share – students each have a room in a privately owned house, which can sometimes sleep as many as 6 or 7
  • Private halls – these aren’t affiliated with any specific university, and are open to all students throughout London in full-time education
  • Residence halls – most universities have their own residences designed for students, usually affiliated with specific colleges if applicable

Central London is a popular destination for students on account of the many Universities located in the city centre. The University of the Arts, the University of Westminster, Kings College and the Royal Veterinary College are all located here, as are many of the city’s top attractions. Prices tend to be expensive here due to the sought-after postcode, but there are plenty of student digs slightly further afield in boroughs like Camden and Kensington that can be easily accessed by London’s exceptional transit system.

When it comes to finding property, there are a few online resources designed to make life easy:

  • Rightmove is the UK’s largest property portal (closely followed by Zoopla), and has a designated site that only lists student accommodation
  • StudentTenant.com is a platform dedicated to student housing, and has a wide range of halls, houses and student flats available, making it easy to view and booking accommodation online
  • Spareroom is the UK’s number one flat and house share site, letting individual rooms across a wide variety of student flats in the UK
