Gone are the days when student halls were basic bedsits with dodgy carpets and non-existent water pressure. Thankfully, things have changed: Instead students can now look forward to living in thoughtfully designed, comfortable accommodation that provides them with a productive environment to get the best grades possible.
Here is some of the best student accommodation you can find across the world right now, offering some great amenities and showcasing some stunning designs.
Spacebox Studios
Location: Apeldoorn, The Netherlands
This accommodation might look like someone just stacked together some storage containers and called it student halls, but that’s not why Spacebox is on the list. Beside its colourful and novel exterior, it offers fully self-contained units and makes great use of a small space.
The container is set up with the necessary appliances and furniture so students can enjoy the space immediately after moving in their personal belongings.
Tietgen Residence Halls
Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
The circular design of the building not only looks great, but offers residents a great communal area by way of the courtyard. The natural building materials used during construction complement and contrast the colourful decoration of the building. Highlights include a classical room with a grand piano, and assembly hall where residents can host parties, something most students like to do!
Cite a Docks
Location: La Havre, France
Living in a box has never looked cooler than this student accommodation comprised of 100 shipping containers, each of which houses an individual apartment. The full-length windows make the apartments feel light and airy, and the metal structure provides space for walkways, patios, and balconies.
Campagneplain Dormitory
Location: Enschede, The Netherlands
Most student accommodation now offers on-site gyms, but for those looking for a workout closer to home, the Campagneplain dorms might just be the thing, because designers have turned a whole side of the building into a climbing wall. It also boasts a communal roof terrace, supermarket, and hairdresser’s salon for students to enjoy.
Smarties Student Housing
Location: Utrecht, The Netherlands
This candy colour building has certainly earned its name due to its eye-catching exterior, but the inside is equally as impressive. The Smarties Building has a mix of 380 independent and clustered rooms to choose from, along with party rooms and alcoves that line its corridors.
Simmons Hall
Location: Cambridge, USA
Nicknamed ‘the sponge’ due to its unique appearance, Simmons Hall has also won multiple awards for its technological features. Aside from the exterior, another unique feature of the building are the so-called ‘lungs’, which are large openings that bring in natural light and circulate air up through the building.
Simmons Hall ensures that residents have a wide variety of amenities available for use, with the on-site gym, a 24/7 dining hall, and even a ball pit.
M6B1 Housing
Location: Paris, France
M6B1 housing offers a breath of fresh air with its green living spaces and open design. Besides a stunning view of Paris, the building offers a space for indoor skateboarding, table tennis, a garden and a rooftop terrace.
Hub at Tucson
Location: Tucson, USA
Nevermind student accommodation, the Hub puts apartments in general to shame.
The list of facilities available to residents at the Hub is lengthy, but some of the highlights include an infinity pool on the rooftop, 42” flat screens in all apartments, walk-in closets and a fitness centre.
As student accommodation goes, it doesn’t get any more luxurious than this.
Casa dell’Academia
Location: Mendrisio, Switzerland
Nestled in the Swiss Alps, the views alone make this one of the best student accommodations around the world. Resembling an Alpine ski resort rather than student halls, it offers open galleries throughout the building, that extend the living areas, and house banquet tables for end of term feasts.
Taliesin Shelters
Location: Scottsdale, USA
Not so much student housing as a DIY project, the Taliesin West Shelters are open to students at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. The concept behind the project was to offer the students an opportunity to create a structure during their studies which they would design, build and then live in. The DIY nature of the project means that Taliesin offers a completely unique form of student accommodation that is personal to each individual.
